Description
The Gulf of Fonseca, a part of the Pacific Ocean, is a gulf in Central America, bordering El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua. It covers an area of roughly 3,200km with a coastline that extends for 261km. The vegetation of the wetland ecosystem is dominated by various species of mangroves. The dominance of different species over others correlates with the frequency of floods, water quality, and levels of salinity. Mangroves are critical coastal ecosystems, supporting diverse wildlife, food production and offering coastal protection from storm surges. A number of volcanoes also lie within and around the gulf.
