The Magellan spacecraft is named after a sixteenth-century explorer whose expedition first circumnavigated the Earth. Magellan orbited Venus for 4 years and collected radar images of 98% of Venus’ surface. Magellan’s data permitted the first global geological understanding of Venus, which is the planet most like Earth in our Solar System. Magellan was the first spacecraft to be deliberately crashed.
